MAY '06  FEATURE
Andre Potter's
Freightliner Raised Roof Argosy

Past Featured Trucks
By Dominic Teahan

When it came time to replace his Scania, Andre Potter knew what he wanted - a Freightliner. More specifically, an FLB model, an ambition inspired by a particular Freightliner FLB that Andre admired. So much so he initially looked at importing a used FLB model into the country.

Instead he decided against it and bought the next best thing the current Freightliner model, an Argosy, and the results are nothing short of spectacular. Nicknamed 'Chariot of Fire', Andre has created a rig that not only looks great, but also boasts some unique features.

Some of the Argosy's interesting features include, twin vertical exhaust and air intakes fitted behind the cab which are complimented by equal spacing to each other with matching 6" diameter. This has forced a unique elbow (see bottom right photo on this page) connected to the exhaust system as the exhausts have been pushed towards the centre of the cab.

The usual chequer plating has been replaced by smooth alloy decking making it easier to keep clean. The guards have a clean finished look with the brackets hidden. The distinctive alloy visor with it's diagonal LEDs was built and fitted by Greg Biggs and Chris Stanley of Auckland and the grille insert, also done by Greg, has been designed with it's rounded corners to match the 'FLB' look. The Ali Arc made alloy bumper features round headlights instead of the usual rectangular ones to match the Freightliners headlights.

The Freightliner is powered by a Cummins Signature 620 hp engine coupled to an 18 speed auto shift gearbox and pulls a 6 axle Roadmaster B-train which has a mezzanine floor and refrigeration unit. The steer tyres are 385-55 super singles and the drive wheels are low profiles. Inside, the cab is fitted with twin bunks, 17" TV, Play Station 2 and numerous communication devices. In the near future Andre intends to add LEDs to the truck and trailer.
