ALMC K200

Shaun McKnight operates three trucks under his company ALMC Limited, with two Kenworths contracted to the NZL Group and a Transtar in ALMC colours. This fat cab Kenworth K200 which was put on the road late 2014 is his flagship. I met Shaun at the NZL Group yard where his driver ‘Spider’ is loading two containers on two brand new Roadmaster manufactured trailers. Able to haul a 20 foot and 40 foot container in one go is impressive and relatively rare in New Zealand.

There is considerable investment in both the tractor unit and trailers. The truck is rated at 97 ton but under the HPMV license is restricted to 50 ton and 23m in length. Powered by a Cummins E5 615hp engine it is coupled to a 2250 manual Roadranger transmission. The Roadmaster trailers feature Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels, alloy guards and loads of compartments needed for flat deck work.

 

The Kenworth features T909 650 litre fuel tanks along with a factory bullbar which Shaun says he prefers to the normal factory bumpers. Chris Stanley provided the drop visor and step inserts with Cliff from Truck Signs applying the cool looking pinstriping and scrolling.

Shaun was fortunate enough to visit the Melbourne Kenworth plant to see his truck being built which he says “was a bloody amazing tour”. Shaun acknowledges Scotty from Southpac and John Blackburn from Roadmaster for their help in getting the Kenworth and trailers setup to his high standards.

The Kenworth hauls a variety of freight from Christchurch to Auckland including plastic piping and concrete prefabs. Thanks to Shaun for the opportunity to photograph his amazing looking Kenworth and remarkable trailers and thanks to driver ‘Spider’ for his time.
