Evil Dog

Matt Sherlock has operated a number of trucks over the years, contracted to Owens, he runs some cool looking Macks hauling containers out of Palmerston North. XT caught up with his Vision and driver Mike Eden at the recent TR Group truck show at the Manfield Autocourse in Feilding where was awarded best tractor unit. Looking sharp, the truck resembles something of a hot rod with its two toned bright red and complimentary black theme.

We were interested in finding out more about the staggering amount of black paint on the Mack. Matt purchased the 2006 vision from MTD in a sorry state, with flaking chrome and stainless everywhere. This presented Matt with an opportunity to do something he had always wanted to do with a truck and had done previously on hot rods. The dominance of paint and relative absence of chrome is something that makes this particular Mack unique.

The black painted parts on the truck, including the grille, badges, bulldog, air horns and Biggspec visor, were applied by Advanced Panel Beaters and Painters Ltd of Palmerston North. They also fabricated the side skirts and aero kit. Matt originally bought a new wood grain dash, the existing one was "unreadable, unusable" and was going to paint it black but in the end to go with red. It was Matt’s idea to fit the side mounted dual exhausts which gives the Mack a throaty bark and the impression it runs more than it’s EA7 470hp engine. The idea behind the chromed rims and painted wheels came from an anniversary Scania Matt had seen and is the only real use of chrome on the truck.

Matt also runs a CH and a quad Granite also on containers mainly operating around the Palmerston and trips around the lower and central North Island as required.

Big thanks to Matt for allowing to feature his Mack Vision and thanks to driver Mike for his time.
