D.J.R. Trucking's
KENWORTH

By Dominic Teahan

With the sheer size of the cab (2.9m) subtlety doesn't appear to be a feature of this striking truck.Featured Truck When Dave Ray purchased this Kenworth Aerodyne in 2005 it was already 2 years old and wearing Mainfreight colours (see picture left). The first thing Dave changed with the truck's appearance was the removing of the existing scrolling on the cab, skirts and bumper, as he wanted a clean look - the "plain big" look Dave explains.

Although going for the "plain big" look with the paint work he also wanted a truck that required close inspection to appreciate it's detail. Some of the other modifications Dave has implemented include fitting stainless side skirts, stainless "Kenworth" shields which show up with blue lights at night, offset alloys on the steerers, a drop visor , great looking 8" pipes, marker lights, including a set of LEDs which have been placed behind the grille.

The name "Mistress" has been written on the side of the skirts and was done in a way so it blends in with the paint work so it can't easily be seen. There are also water proof speakers fitted to the rear of the cab for when the truck is being washed. Inside the spacious sleeper is a 20" Plasma TV and a Playstation 2 for those much needed breaks.

Based in Masterton the Kenworth covers much of the North Island hauling general freight contracted to Mainfreight in a 5 axle Fruehauf B-train. Power comes in the form of a 600hp CAT engine which is coupled to a 18 speed Roadranger and the combination does a night run from Masterton to Hamilton to Auckland return.

Dave spends a lot of time keeping his rig in top shape. XT caught up with Dave at a fundraiser in Rotorua recently (the photos without the trailer) and the truck looked like it had just rolled off the assembly line - impressive when you consider it's fast approaching a million kms.

We caught up with him again in Pahiatua a few months later this time with the trailer and we began to truly appreciate the level of commitment he puts into the presentation of his immaculate Aerodyne. Dave was just finishing polishing the trailer wheels and explained that "this is as dirty as you'll see it". Normally he chalk the tyres and does this once a week for that different look.

Thanks to Dave for his time. XT congratulates him on his superb looking rig and his professional manner as an operator.
