JUNE FEATURE

Chances are you won't be lucky enough to encounter this big bright Kenworth nicknamed 'OVERKILL' on the road. Thats because this immaculately presented rig is Gordon Dahm's hobby and only carts sprint cars during the speedway season.

Gordon Dahm runs a logging cartage company based on the outskirts of Tokoroa consisting of 25 trucks. His son drives one of the three sprint cars that the Kenworth hauls to the speedway meets.

The rig was purchased from John Dynes, the owner of the well known TD Haulage company based in Mt Maunganui. The '86 W924 came with no engine, trans or sleeper. It now has a 465 hp Cummins engine coupled to a 15 Speed RoadRanger transmission.

The 62" Hi-Rise sleeper came from a Western Star owned by a mate of Gordon's who had brought it back from the States. He had no need for it, as he had converted his truck to a tipper, so Gordon had Malcolm Cab Solutions from Rotorua fit the roomy sleeper to the Kenworth along with the fuel tanks from the Western Star.

The bright yellow paint work was done by a local company in Tokoroa - Pete's Panel & Paint Shop and the sign writing and pin striping done by Marty's High Performance Signs Ltd from the Mt Maunganui. To add a bit more shine the wheel rims and air cleaners were chromed.

The truck also features sky high 6" stacks, front block bumper with marker lights and custom back bumper, Foden air horns - as the Kenworth ones were too long after the sleeper was fitted, numerous Kenworth accessories as well many other trimmings - e.g. a stainless steel chequered flag (see middle photo below).

The truck travels the North and South islands during the speedway season. So if you're at a speedway meet be sure to keep an eye out for the transporter. Big thanks to Gordon for his time and allowing X Trucking to photograph and feature is fantastic Kenworth W924 - 'OVERKILL'.
