This blinged out Western Star is owned by Robin Jago of Palmerston North. The truck is double shifted and is driven by Matt Sherlock (pictured below left) during the day and by Mike Eden at night.

Robin's previous truck was a Mack CL 722 and after more than a million kms it was time for the truck to be replaced. According to Matt, who has had a big say in the new truck's set-up, the Mack was a brilliant truck to drive.

It handled nicely in wet conditions and had some serious power. With it's low roof aero-kit, side skirts, wrap-around bumper and sloping bonnet the truck had an aerodynamic look, a stark contrast to his latest purchase.

But with the relative cost of the 'equipped' stock Western Star compared to the 'bare' Australian Super-Liner and other considered options a Western Star seemed to be the favourable choice.

The 4964FX Western Star is powered by a Cummins signature 620hp engine which has been de-rated to 580hp for fuel economy reasons and to allow for its varied work. At night the truck does a Wairakei swap pulling a 6 axle Roadmaster B-train. Between it two daily runs and after being on the road for three and half weeks the truck has already clocked up 17 000kms.

Deluxe Interior

A standard spec'd Western Star is normally well equipped with a lot of stainless, but this star has been fitted with a little more eXtra bling. Almost $40K worth of engineering work and stainless has gone onto this rig! This includes the wing mounted on the cab roof which was imported by Western Star from the States.

Dual tanks..? ...no, a toolbox!

The visor was manufactured and fitted in Mt Maunganui. Another feature of 'OWENS1' is the 'dummy' fuel tanks which have been added to both sides of the chassis. These are effectively toolboxes that have been designed to match the existing tanks while providing eXtra storage and space for the battery boxes (see photos). Other eXtras include 6" add on exhausts, full stainless/chequer plating on the chassis, stainless guards, chrome bug deflector, leather seats and much more.

The Star is not finished yet. It is destined to be the first truck to have a new type of air cleaner hat fitted. Designed in New Zealand the hats will be the same 'square' designed ones pictured, but will be chrome covered - 'chrome on plastic', with chrome mesh on the intake side. The red caps on the towers will be replaced with stainless effectively completing the trucks 'blinged' look. According to Robin and Matt, there could be even more to come with talk of flames going on the big red bonnet in the near future.

Big thanks to Matt for his time and effort in preparing the truck for the photos and Robin for allowing us to feature his new Western Star. Also thanks to Mike for his time.
